Medical Assistant I - Marsing Clinic

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES       

Provides medical support duties within a multi-disciplinary, Patient Centered Medical Home care team. General medical support duties include, but are not limited to, rooming patients, taking vital signs, assisting with procedures, performing basic laboratory services, completing x-ray examinations, processing medication refill requests, processing sterile supplies and administering medications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  1. Prepares patient for clinician encounter by checking patient into examination rooms in accordance with Standard Rooming Protocol and assists with patient education. Completes a minimum of 2 hours continuing education each calendar year.
  2. Assure that care protocols are adhered to and completed in order to meet/exceed Patient Center Medical Home's high quality standards
  3. Work with licensed clinical team members, nursing leadership and all support team members in order to meet or exceed minimum threshold requirements in all core clinical measures within established clinical guidelines
  4. Assists with patient education such as explaining treatments, procedures, medications, diets and after visit instructions as directed by clinician and/or nursing leadership. Completes a minimum of 2 hours continuing education for personal professional growth each calendar year.
  5. Generate all necessary EMR nursing documentation for each patient encounter, following current protocols.  
  6. Communicate all necessary patient information to other health care professionals, both in TR and to outside facilities.
  7. In accordance with documented competency, independently performs nursing procedures such as ear lavage, EKG, medication administration, wound care and diabetic foot exams per established protocols.
  8. In accordance with documented competency, assists medical clinician with procedures such as IUD insertion, LEEP, cryotherapy, joint injections, suturing, colposcopy, PAP, biopsy, orthopedic casting, circumcision and nail removal. Prepares and maintains sterile field as necessary.
  9. Responds to emergency situations in accordance with BLS protocols and established TR policies/procedures.
  10. Maintains adequate stock of all medical supplies and equipment in exam and treatment rooms.
  11. In accordance with documented competency, obtains and processes lab specimens according to established TR policy and protocols: blood, urine, etc. Completes all necessary documentation via LIS/EMR and ensures all labs are resulted prior to the end of shift.
  12. Monitors and documents Lab QA and emergency equipment checks per protocol.
  13. Receives and processes medication refill requests and faxes per protocol.
  14. In accordance with documented competency, administers medications on clinician's orders following the 6 Rights of Medication Administration.
  15. Monitors patient schedule in advance, to ensure all appropriate records, equipment and supplies are available.
  16. Completes all tasks and assignments delegated by RN Supervisor and Lead MA.
  17. In accordance with documented training/orientation, administers x-ray examinations as ordered by a medical clinician exercising professional judgment in the performance of procedures. Ensure that all EMR/quality documentation is completed timely and accurately
  18. In accordance with documented training/orientation, collect blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens, per established protocols and procedures and prepare them for testing. Ensure that all EMR/quality documentation is completed timely and accurately.
  19. Appropriately positions and transfers patients when needed utilizing good body mechanics and ensuring the safety and comfort of the patient.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an accredited Medial Assisting program.
  • Must receive certification within 12 months of employment.    
  • Able to walk and stand for long periods of time.
  • Able to lift 30 pounds.
  • Ability to understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and written communications.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas verbally and in writing, using appropriate grammar and spoken words that others will understand.
  • Understands and practices principles and processes for providing high quality customer service to all clients and team members.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
